Say NO to Facial Recognition

Citizens Accountability & Oversight Project (COAP) knows how important little wins are going to be as we move forward, so along with other initiatives, they have launched a petition against facial recognition in North Cowichan. COAP will be presenting this petition on behalf of North Cowichan Residents, as well as visitors to North Cowichan for instances such as regular shopping, commuting through, and citizens who enjoy the beauty of North Cowichan. 

You are welcome to sign the petition on-line as either a resident or a visitor to North Cowichan, but what would be even better would be to print the printable version off, and carry it in your vehicle, or bring to your store to get multiple signatures. Bill 27 - Should Canadians be Concerned

April 24th the Speaker declared parts 1, 2 and 3 of Bill 27 (Digital Charter Implementation Act) were carried. The Bill has been referred to committee. This Bill combines multiple acts, including Artificial Intelligence and Data Act. Given the massive amount of information in this Bill, can we trust that our government officials fully reviewed this Bill in its entirety before they voted on it?

The National Citizens Inquiry (NCI) wrapped up in Vancouver and will be heading to Quebec City May 11-13. We need to keep educating the public and creating awareness of this important inquiry as it is an opportunity for national dialogue and transparency. SPELLERS - Presented by The Highwire

The HighWire Studio plays host to the award-winning documentary, SPELLERS, with a Q&A before a LIVE studio audience immediately following the film. 

“What if everything you thought you knew about autism was wrong?” SPELLERS answers that question, in convincing fashion, through the stories of eight nonspeakers—Aydan, Evan, Sid, Maddie, Jamie, Vince, Cade, and Elizabeth—who all found their voice through the miraculous process of using a letterboard to communicate their thoughts and feelings. As Jamie explains, “we think, feel, and learn just like everyone else.” 

SPELLERS challenges conventional wisdom regarding a group relegated to society’s margins: nonspeakers with autism, who most “experts” believe are cognitively disabled. The film blends beautiful cinematography with heart-wrenching stories of these eight spellers and a strong message for every parent of a nonspeaker: your child can do this, too.
